RFID Site Analysis
With a clear statement of what needs to be accomplished, which is the outcome of the RFID Assessment, the Site Analysis examines the physical environment where the RFID system will be installed and used.
Unless the RFID system is being designed for a new facility, the working space, whether it is a tool room check-in / check-out, a machine shop floor, a manufacturing facility or a warehouse, is already a functioning system to some extent. Some of those systems will be replaced. Others will be integrated into the RFID system. The RFID system itself will require seamless and robust integration into the in-place computer network.
Working from the engineering check list, the Site Analysis creates a highly specific working document from which the requirements and specifications for the whole system is compiled. This becomes a document with several landmark components:
- An accurate overall cost estimate
- A comprehensive equipment list
- An integration roadmap
- An installation timeline
Once compiled, the Site Analysis document becomes an invaluable working manual not only for the installation, but also as a repository for all of the myriad configuration details and decisions that aggregate into the total installation.
The client is encouraged to retain at least one redundant copy off site. A third a fourth redundant copy are archived at Datalogic Automation and at Fotel. These are valuable assets in case technical support is required. Working from these copies, our tech support personnel are able to see and understand the system without a lot of explanation from the client. This helps us quickly understand and resolve the problem.
Most RFID Solutions companies do not work to this level of detail. They may argue that such diligence inflates up-front and non-productive project costs, and creates delay in install scheduling.
We counter-argue that diligence in system design and install planning is always an investment that pays back, over and over again, throughout the lifetime of the integration. In the short run and in the long run it is a very smart investment.
