RFID Assessment

Like many advancing technologies, there is more misinformation about RFID than actual information. When RFID technology is appropriate and well-engineered, it generates return-on-investment. But when RFID is inappropriate to the situation and/or poorly executed, it can be a liability.

RFID Assessment addresses the problems or pain points in a tracking or manufacturing system to determine if any technology, RFID or something else can provide a solution. This is a systematic process based on a comprehensive list of questions that are answered by the prospective customer.

It is impossible (and unethical) for any RFID systems integrator to estimate costs or installation times prior to customer completion of the RFID Assessment.

In addition to detailing the nature of the customer’s business, process and problems for which a technology solution is being considered, the RFID Assessment is the point at which the customer must designate a project manager. This person serves two critical roles: they are the company’s internal coordinator of all involved parties. While job titles vary across industry lines and types, typical personnel to be included are process engineer, quality engineer, director of manufacturing and appropriate supervisory personnel with purchasing authority.

The second critical role of the project manager is point-of-contact for the EMS Technical Support people at Fotel. It is essential that the company’s project manager and Fotel tech support are in complete synchronization about the scope of work before any system engineering work can begin.

Once the RFID assessment document has been completed and submitted to Fotel, a Conclusions Conference is scheduled between Fotel tech support and the company project manager and other company personnel. This is usually a teleconference. It is at this conference that conclusions are reported and discussed.

If an RFID solution is recommended, the Pre-Installation Planning Checklist is conveyed to the company immediately.
