RFID Applications
Industrial Automation
An automatic inspection company integrated RFID into their conveyerized sortation system. The system changeover can take as much as 30 minutes, for an operator to reset gate width, scale measurements and camera positioning. High capacity database-on-board RFID tags are sent through the system at the end of an inspection run, instructing the system to reconfigure for the next run. Changeover now takes about 15 seconds and the error rate has dropped dramatically.
Manufacturing
An aerospace manufacturer in the Midwest replaced their barcode-based tool crib operation with RFID tags, to reduce the replacement cost of damaged or illegible labels in their machine shop. The ability to rewrite the RFID tags at check-out enabled them to associate them with the user, making it easier to retrieve them and to determine which users tended to damage or lose them. This also allowed them to time and date stamp each tool so ISO-required recalibration could be planned. The database-on-board functionality of the tags made it possible to identify tags on the shop floor using handheld RFID readers. The savings have far exceeded original estimates because RFID technology has substantially increased the intelligence and functionality of the tool crib operation.
Food & Beverage
A major dairy processor in the Eastern US has been losing plastic milk cartons at a cost of $5 million per year. The problem is the usefulness of plastic dairy cartons as camping totes, dorm room bookshelf supports and play room toy storage. From a technology standpoint, the problem has been the inability track their cartons.
