gs1databarNewsflash! Your old analog TV will work another few months but that’s the least of it. If you are a food retailer you won’t have to worry that your barcode scanning systems are compliant to GS1 Databar for another (almost) 5 years!

The GS1 Databar 2010 sunrise has been extended to 2014. This is the result of feedback GS1 Global has received from retailers around the world, a majority of whom just aren’t going to be ready by 2010.

Early adopter nations are instructed to continue moving ahead, but others have an additional four years to get on board.

It is expected that all GS1 Standards for Databar should be in place in all retail establishments by 2014. These include encoding the batch number and expiration date in the barcode. But minimally, retailers must be able to scan and data process the GTIN by 2014.

Retailers using barcode scanning equipment not more than 3 years old are probably compliant with GS1 Databar but they, along with all others, should test to be sure.

Databar testing can be done very easily and inexpensively. A free databar test card is available, from Fotel, by request. Contact customer service for more information.
