GS1 BarCodes Announces Global Adoption of GS1 DataBar™

New, Smaller BarCode Carries More Data

GS1 has announced a global sunrise date of Jan 1, 2010 for a new barcode called GS1 DataBar™, previously known as Reduced Space Symbology (RSS). This is the first time since the EAN/UPC bar code was adopted that GS1 has endorsed a bar code for global, open trade item identification.

By January 1, 2010, GS1 DataBar will be used on small products, but only for GTIN-13 or GTIN -12, not GTIN -14. However, even before 2010, retailers can use GS1 DataBar for in-store printed products, even with information beyond GTIN in the bar code, if their systems are ready to go
The following industries have already incorporated GS1 Databar symbols;

• Fresh Foods, Meat and Produce
• Healthcare - Item identification
• Coupons  

EAN/UPC will continue to be used for the foreseeable future as the decision to adopt GS1 DataBar for existing applications will be made by brand owners on a needs basis. There are many benifits to changing over to the New DataBar format.

GS1 DataBar Benifits:

• GS1 DataBar can identify small items and carry more information than the current EAN/UPC bar code.
• GS1 DataBar will be available in all trade item scanning systems beginning January 1, 2010
• GS1 DataBar provides a good migration path to EPC in the near future. The two technologies complement each other.
• GS1 DataBar will enable GTIN identification for hard-to-mark products like fresh foods and can carry GS1 Application Identifiers such as serial numbers, lot numbers, and expiration dates, which creates the opportunity for solutions supporting product authentication and traceability, product quality and effectiveness, variable measure product identification, and couponing.

On January 1, 2008  a new coupon barcode format "DataBar" was introduced.
The New Databar Coupon format will benefit manufacturers, retailers and coupon processors. Databar Coupon format is the most complex of any code introduced by GS1. Its data capacity allows users greater flexibility for complex offers, accurate tracking and fraud reduction.

Interim Databar Coupon		Start by 01/01/2008 - Complete by 06/01/2008
		In 2008, the “Interim” Databar coupon code including GTIN 12 (UPC-A) code and GS1 DataBar coupon code end-to-end should be intergrated. Manufactures should stop using GS1-128 coupon exensions and begin using Interim Databar Coupon format.
Final Databar Coupon		Start by 01/01/2010 - Complete by 06/01/2010
		In 2010, the GS1 DataBar coupon code will stand alone. Manufactures should stop using UPC/EAN coupon prefix and begin using New Databar Coupon format alone.
