Bar and space width, compensation for press gain, resolution of image-setting equipment, press characteristics, etc. are all important elements when producing film masters for barcodes.

There are many variables in the pre-press and printing processes
that can have a dramatic impact on bar code quality;knowing where these variables exist is the first step in controlling them. The ability to produce a controlled result, i.e. a bar code that is within specification, time after time in spite of variables in a process, is called repeatability.
It can be an elusive - but critical - goal in printing high quality bar codes. The film master is the first and only variable that can be controlled. Your film master manufacturer should function as a partner by providing the correct image or data and helping you to identify and understand the variables in this early pre press step.

What are some of these variables?

• How much press gain compensation (bar width reduction) should the film master
  contain?
• Is the symbol the proper size (magnification) for the method of printing?
• What color will the bars and background be? Will the color combination scan well?
• Have the film specifications (positive, negative, emulsion UP, emulsion down) been
  defined so that the bar code film master can be stripped directly into the existing
  artwork? Published industry specifications for UPC dictate that that film masters must be accurate to
  .0002 inch. This means that a film master, which exceeds its specification, starts to use some
  of the printer’s tolerance specification. If other pre-press operations contribute to further erosion of the
  image quality, it might already be impossible to produce a readable bar code even
  before printing has begun!
