What is a Portable Barcode Verifier?
Portable barcode verifiers are battery powered so you can take the verifier to the barcode anywhere on the production or packaging floor. These verifiers have an onboard memory and display so you can see test reports “in the field”. Memory capacity is usually over a hundred symbols, depending on the barcode type and length. Portable verifiers can dump the saved data to an optional, wall-current powered printer. Some also have optional computer connectivity so you can view, print, save, and email test reports. Portable barcode verifiers tend to be the easiest to use, the most rugged, and the least expensive.

Portable Barcode Verifiers have many different configurations
Some portable verifiers use gun type lasers or imagers to scan a barcode. These devices do no perform full-ANSI tests because they cannot test for reflectivity and contrast. Often gun-type verifiers will support wand input devices which will perform full ANSI tests. Gun type devices are easiest to use- point and shoot. Wands take a little getting-used-to. Barcodes printed on non-flat surfaces such as flexible packaging or cylindrical shapes are difficult-to-impossible to test with wand devices.
Not all Portable barcode verifiers can read all barcode symbologies.
Currently, there are no portable verifiers for testing anything other than 1D or linear barcodes. Barcode verification of 2D symbols including stacked linear and matrix symbols can only be done with non-portable barcode verifiers.
Portable barcode verifiers from Honeywell are available in a range of capabilities, from basic symbologies only to various modes which test specific industry applications such as HealthCare, Automotive, Retail Trade, and others.
Portable barcode verifiers form RJS and Axicon currently test basic symbologies only.

Why do you need to verify printed barcodes?
Barcode Verification is risk management and it takes knowledge and expertise to do it right. Most sales organizations just want to sell you something-that’s their business plan. You could end up spending too much, or too little, and not be managing the risk of a poorly performing barcode. That risk includes substantial fines from retailers, lost shelf space, terminated customer relationships and a damaged reputation. Verification is akin to insurance: you hope you’ll never need it but you can’t really function without it. "But we’ve never had a problem" is no excuse.
A Barcode Scanner is not the same as a Barcode Verifier. Don’t be fooled into thinking you can substitute a scanner for a verifier. They are not the same. Scanners of various makes and ages perform differently. One scanner may read a barcode while another won’t. Only an ISO verifier can tell you how a barcode will perform, and how its performance may be deteriorating over the duration of a print run. Is it a good, solid ANSI "C" grade or is it a low "C" drifting toward a "D"? Only a verifier will tell you. Only a verifier will give you the eyes to see and the time to make a critical adjustment that can save the print run--and the customer.
