- Verification does tell you that the symbol will read.
- Verification does not tell you that the symbol represents an authentic item.
That is why barcode validation is necessary.
Validation is to spelling what verification is to penmanship.
Barcode verification has received so much attention, many industry experts believe that verification is all that is necessary to assure supply chain integrity. This is not true. A high-performing barcode that either misrepresents one item as another, or represents no actual item at all breaches the supply chain just as effectively as a poor or non-performing barcode.
Barcode validators check the barcode’s correlation to a specific item. Some verifiers claim to perform this test, but can only do so in a special mode, and can only do so against a user-loaded database. If the user’s database is flawed, the validation test is meaningless.
Validation is only meaningful if the database is the same one being used in the supply chain.
