Hand held barcode scanners are always tethered to a host computer, but that doesn’t mean the tether is always a wire. There are corded hand-held barcode scanners that connect directly to the computer, but there are also wireless variants that communicate by Bluetooth to a base station that is cord-connected to the computer. The base also acts as a recharger for the batteries onboard the scanner.
What type of barcode do you need to scan?
In addition to deciding if you need a general purpose or an industrial barcode scanner, you should ask yourself what type of barcode do you need to scan?

1D Linear Barcode | 1D Stacked Linear Barcode | 2D Barcode |
Not all barcode scanners can read all barcode symbologies.
Barcode scanners are available with basically three types of readers: Laser, CCD, & Imagers. The reader type, and software included, will determine what type of barcode symbologies can be read.
- Laser Barcode Readers
Laser barcode readers, as the description implies, use a laser or laser diode to draw a line through the barcode, which is reflected back into the optical receptor to decode the barcode symbol.
Laser readers can decode only 1D linear codes such as , GTIN-12, UPC, EAN, GTIN-14.
Laser readers cannot decode 2D or matrix codes, although some (but not all) laser readers can decode 1D stacked linear symbols like PDF417 and GS1 Databar Stacked barcode symbols.Older laser readers use a spinning multi-faceted mirror which makes these scanners somewhat sensitive and delicate.
- CCD Barcode Readers
CCD barcode readers, also known as Linear Imagers, use an array of LED’s and receptors to decode linear barcodes. Usually a CCD barcode reader must be in contact with the barcode to decode it.
CCD readers can scan 1D and 1D stacked linear barcodes such as PDF417.
CCD barcode readers have no moving parts and tend to be quite robust. - Linear Imager Barcode Readers
Linear imager barcode readers are digital camera devices and decode linear and 2D symbols.
Imagers can read 1D, 1D stacked, 2D, and some can also capture images such as signatures and text.
Linear imagers have no moving parts and tend to be quite robust.
Barcode scanners also have many different options such as long range readers, high speed readers. Most barcode scanners come with connection options such as USB, PS2 Keyboard, RS-232, Cordless, Bluetooth and more.
